Field Trips + School Collaborations

A WHOLE WORLD OF MAKING AWAITS

  • Hands-on learning✅
  • Full use of BitSpace’s cutting-edge facility✅
  • Expert Guides✅
  • In-school collaboration✅

If you’re looking for a different kind of field trip for your students, you’ve found it. At BitSpace, our goal is for every child to have access to high quality maker ed experiences. As the only youth-focused makerspace in Chicago, we strive to make that easy for every school.

Whether your school chooses a one-time, three-hour field trip to our Innovation Hub (where kids ideate, design, and make) or one of our extended “blended” programs, you can feel confident your students will get to flex their creative muscles and experience cutting edge tools and technologies.

What is a BitSpace Innovation Field Trip?

Woodshop, laser cutting, and electronics here we come! Your students will love this three-hour field trip to our Innovation Hub where they will experience tools and tech first hand. Their making journey starts with woodshop work, where students will use hand and power tools to cut pieces for their creation, followed by Guide-led sessions with our laser cutter.

BLENDED: BITSPACE INNOVATION HUB + IN-SCHOOL (6 sessions)
Option 1: Design Fair/Maker Fair/Genius Hour/Passion Project

Is a Design Fair or Genius Hour in your students’ future? Let’s bring it to life…together. This “blended” option gives you the flexibility of bringing our Guides into your school to help students ideate, scope, and plan their projects, followed by a field trip to our Innovation Hub. Once there, they will be able to turn their ideas into reality under the direction of our guide team while using our state-of-the-art maker equipment.

How it works:
  • This program alternates between in-classroom visits from the BitSpace team and field trips to the BitSpace Innovation Hub.
  • The BitSpace team will visit your classroom three times in total to collaborate and help guide your students through the ideation and design phases.
  • Students will benefit from expert professional feedback on the scope of their projects, the ideas themselves, and their material choices.
  • When students visit the BitSpace Innovation Hub (on three separate occasions), they will work on the “making” stage of their product with the help of our Guides. They will have access to our comprehensive offering of both high and low-tech tools to bring their ideas to life.

Option 2: Game Creation

How do you connect design thinking, communications, 3D modeling, and physical construction to programmable electronics and virtual reality? By creating a game, of course! Students will learn to use 3D modeling software, create in our woodshop using power tools and the laser cutter, and see firsthand how our physical and digital worlds can connect via programmable electronics.

How it works:
  • This program alternates between in-classroom visits from the BitSpace team and field trips to the BitSpace Innovation Hub.
  • The BitSpace team will visit your classroom three times in total and your students will have three working sessions at our Innovation Hub.
  • Students will learn the basics of 3D modeling, make drawings of the vehicles they want to make for the game, and use 3D modeling software to create their virtual vehicles from those drawings.
  • Students will then design an electronic component that they can build in the BitSpace woodshop.
  • Students will come to BitSpace to learn how to use woodshop tools and the laser cutter to build contraptions which will control their virtual vehicles.
  • Students will get a demonstration on how programmable electronics (Arduino) work in conjunction with the game development platform (Unity 3D). They will see how their built wooden objects can be used to control the virtual vehicles the students made as teams race each other in a virtual reality racecourse.
