Tool Time!

MAKE IT, RACE IT!

This course includes everything you need to lead a group of students through our Make It, Race It program, from safety basics to lessons broken down week by week. Each week is indicative of what you would do during one hour-long class session.

Feel free to complete multiple weeks of this course at a time. During these lessons you will utilize your individual project kit and tools to complete each phase of the project. Save your completed project to photograph for course certification and to use as an example with your class.

ESSENTIAL TOOLS NEEDED:

  • safety goggles
  • ear plugs
  • hair ties
  • clamps (multiple sizes and more than you think you’ll need)
  • rulers, tape measurers, and rafter squares
  • hand saws
  • drill and driver sets with spare pilot bits sizes 7/64, 1/4, 9/32, 1/2, 31/64
  • T25 driver bit (aka torx driver bits)
  • small dust bin and brush
  • pencils and sharpener
  • worksurface (it will get used i.e. cut and drilled into so better something unimportant)

 

USEFUL BUT NOT NECESSARY TOOLS

  • 8×10″ MDF spoil boards (to protect tables if no suitable worksurface is available)
  • coping saw and replacement blades
  • wire cutters (for easy dowel cutting)
  • sand paper (coarse and medium grits)
  • wood glue
  • hot glue gun
  • masking tape
  • hammer

LESSON PLANS

Lesson Plans are generally broken down according to Introduction, Presentation, Activity, and Clean Up. Each section will be introduced with the corresponding logo.

This course is written in tandem with the lessons and includes videos of any presentation or demonstrations as well as instructions for other areas of the lesson. We suggest that you use the lesson plans as you work through the course.
